When I arrived at the Catholic boarding school, there were eight other boys that joined us. We were stripped naked and showered. We got new clothes. I was happy.

We then boarded a ship. It was a bumpy ride. A lot of us got seasick and one boy even got sick on me. The journey was so unsettling; two boys were placed into another part of the ship. I found out later that they ended up dying. When I next saw them, they were wrapped in a blanket. You could smell the bodies a mile away. Our teacher said a prayer for them, as they got thrown overboard.
The ship smelt really bad. The captain used to hit us if we were bad. One day the Captain accidentally heard me say ‘feck’ and he hit me on my head once and told me not to do it again. Other than that time, he was nice to the rest of us.

I don’t know how long I was on the ship for. All I know is that we were sailing for so long my hair grew to my back. When we left the ship the Captain gave us a coin. I didn’t know what it was, but he called it a ‘dime’.
