Billie-Jo, Chapter and Verse (Thomas Cowley High School)

The Stars at Oktober Bend

This really is an unique book. When I first started reading it I thought that it would be just another 'special' love story, but after reading it, all I want to do is read it again! I say this because Alice, the main character, is quite an individual. The writing seems to come from her mind, but the poems she scatters about seem to come from a mind much older.

I would also say that the book confused me, but that's only a half-truth. The manner in which the book is written and comes across is very child-like, but when you reach a key moment in the plot - YOU KNOW in an instant.

Overall, the book starts slowly and calmly and keeps that pace and tone through until the very end, even at the story's climax where in other books the atmosphere of the narrative would change dramatically.

I would recommend this book to someone of 12+ years - although the language is relatively 'easy', the main theme of the book is slightly more adult. All in all, this is a fantastic book!
