The Smell of Other People's Houses
'The Smell of Other People's Houses' could have been a fantastic book. It could have won this and many other awards quite easily, as it had an intriguing plot line and deep characters. But it isn't and it won't.
My group read this book after 'Salt to the Sea': another book with opinions from four different people. It highlighted how badly this second book was written, as there were hardly any dramatic occurrences, and the few there were, were extremely downplayed. Many things were not explained properly and left giant plot holes. Also the characters' backstories and opinions didn't shine through in their chapters; there is a lot more I would like to know about all of them. The ending, too, tied things up extremely neatly, leaving no room for a sequel or any follow-on. And finally, who on earth is crazy dancing guy?
To conclude, I believe that this book had an amazing plan, but all the marvellous ideas got lost in a quick hurry to write any book. I do not think it has much chance of winning at all.
