Salt to the Sea

This has been my favourite book so far! I found the plot was really dense and twisting, so I couldn't wait to get to the next bit. My favourite character was definitely the Shoe Poet, as I thought that although he wasn't a main character, he had a nice story line that really pleased me!
Never at one point did I feel the plot was dragging on or moving too slowly, unlike with some of the other shortlisted books.
However, at the start, the change of characters was really quick, because you were swapping between four characters every chapter, and I found that a bit hard to grasp. Although, the way the first four chapters are written is really clever, even if it was a little confusing.
The description was beautiful, and a little bit gruesome at times. I think that it being a bit gruesome is important, because it felt like I was watching it all happen, and with a war based novel you need to be able to take the scenes seriously.
Finally, I think Ruta Sepetys wrote an intensely beautiful book, that really grabbed my attention. I would really like it to win the final award!
