The Hate U Give
What's Khalil hiding ? Is he a Thug ? Not seen him in ages. Is that siren for us ? OMG they shot him ! Khalil is gone ...
Starr's world is fine. She lives in the ghetto and life is fine. Her school is posh and causes her to have two personalities but she's fine. Everything is fine.
And then it's not. Khalil's dead, she's the witness but she isn't (doesn't want to be). Friendships are breaking families are breaking. Starr's world is falling apart.
Everything is not fine !
This book is amazing ! The language used is perfect the book is gripping, thrilling but still emotional and shocking. Based around the problems of racism and the right to own a gun in America, this book has everything. The slogan "The Hate You Give" is used consistently throughout the book and reflects on the problems for youth in America.
My favourite character is Starr's Mum she is always the one looking for sunshine in the clouds always supporting her "baby girl" and telling Starr multiple times "I love you, baby" helping the whole way. My least favourite character is King. A horrible, brutal drug dealer and "gangbanger", he abuses his wife and kids and threatens Starr's family throughout the book. But he gets what he deserves towards the end of the story.
I would recommend this book to anyone above the age of 13 years as there is a lot of swearing and it is hard to understand the African American accent to start with. I would rate this book 4.5/5 and my only criticism is that there should be less drama and more " happy ending ".
