Bethany, Burgess Hill Girls

The Hate U Give

A very powerful and thought-provoking novel, that explores racism, injustice and discrimination. Starr's experience is brought to life vividly, and the sheer brutality of it really hit me as the reader. I could feel her frustration, and every decision she made was understandable, but also made a huge statement. Angie Thomas has captured the events from a perfect perspective so that we fully understand the grim reality of the situation, and feel sympathy for Starr and her community, when perhaps from another perspective we wouldn’t have felt this way. The novel raises awareness of the harsh environment people like Starr have had to live in in real life, and pays a tribute to those that have died in a similar way to Khalil. I got completely lost in the story and couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend this book.
