Railhead by Philip Reeve is a book set in the future where humanity has left Earth and settled on many different worlds. Travelling in between worlds is not achieved by spaceships, but by unusual trains that pass through networks of gateways, otherwise known as K-gates. The main character Zen Starling is a low-profile, petty thief who gets hired by a master criminal, Raven, to steal the pyxis (one of the few black orbs that can open up new K-gates). In order to do so, Zen has to disguise himself as a multi-billionaire's son, Tallis Noon. He eventually succeeds but has to face the consequences of his actions. I really liked this book as I found the idea of travelling between worlds engrossing.I would recommend this book to 11-13 year olds.
