This was a beautifully written novel , though a rather grim and depressing story at times. Enjoyed the beginning however to me the plot seems very fast pace and unrealistic and there were a lot of things that could have been slowed down and analysed in more depth. I also found that it was hard to empathise and connect with Beck as a character. Overall Beck was definately not my favourite of the books I have read so far, but had some interesting themes and still gave me an insight into what life would have been like for many young black orphans who would have had to endure so many hardships, abuse and racism at that time.
