Beyond the Bright Sea

Beyond the Bright Sea is a book about a girl named Crow who was washed up on an island called Cuttyhunk in a skiff. She is found by someone she calls Osh who tells her she was only a newborn when he found her. Osh is very mysterious and he doesn't like to talk about his background or how he came to be on the island.

As Crow has a different colour skin to everyone else on the island, they think she came from an island nearby called Penikese where people with leprosy used to live. Nobody likes to touch her and the school refused to take her so she is home schooled by someone called Miss Maggie, the only person apart from Osh who doesn't mind touching her. The only clue Crow has about where she came from is a strange birthmark in the shape of a feather.

During the book, Crow is determined to find out who her parents are and Osh gives her a letter which he found with her when she was washed up. The ink has been washed away and only a few words remain. She convinces Osh and Miss Maggie to take her to Penikese where she finds a man tied up by another man who is a 'birdwatcher'; he is actually looking for treasure.

At the end of the book, Crow finds out who her real parents are, where she was from and why they abandoned her at such a young age. She also finds out what her real name is with the help of a doctor and a nurse who used to work at the leper hospital.

I would recommend this book to someone who likes mysteries and suspense.
