The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give is about a teenage girl called Starr who lives in two worlds, Garden Heights and the suburbs. The author focuses on racism which is a major problem in society today. My favourite character is Chris, Starr's boyfriend. He is my favourite character as he tries to understand what Starr goes through and even though it may feel uncomfortable he tries to hang around with Starr’s Garden Heights friends and her family. The Hate U Give feels so real to me as everyday racism is happening to people all around the world and I like how Angie Thomas highlights this. I would recommend this book to anyone in secondary school as I believe that they have more of an understanding of what is happening in the book. This book kept me guessing and this is what I like about a book because it grips you in and keeps you reading. My favourite quote from the book is "what's the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent". This is my favourite quote as it is true because if you believe something is wrong or you don't agree with something you should speak out. This is a great competitor for the Carnegie award.
