The Smell of Other People's Houses
This book is about Alaska and life there for four young people after it becomes a state. At the beginning, the links between the stories seemed tenuous at most. Although the different characters were reminiscent of Salt to the Sea, it wasn't nearly as good - disappointingly. It was very dull but as the book progressed, I warmed up to Ruth and Dora's tales. Towards the end, something clicked and I finally understood the connections and I started to get engrossed in the plot. There were remarkable descriptions and eloquent transitions. Not my cup of tea, but credit when it's due, it got better.
