Auronyo, King Edward VI Grammar School

Beck

Beck is a gritty story of a child/young man, unsurprisingly named Beck. Without giving away too much, it is his story of his survival as a black child first in England, then Canada. He travels far, living with the Christian Brothers, foster families, bootleggers and more. A mature book, complete with harrowing experiences told by Beck, first Mal Peet, then his friend Meg Rosoff as Mal was dying and eventually died of cancer. It is a novel with an unflinching take of time long past, full of inequalities, that concludes showing that there is always kindness and a place for anyone in the world, now or before.
