The Bone Sparrow

I loved The Bone Sparrow. After a few chapters it really got me trapped and brought me into the life of the characters.

It is a very well written book and I felt as if I was there. It is a wonderfully told novel that gives the reader a vivid view of what refugees have to face. The characters are well developed, believable and created a sense of reality making you want to read on. What I quite liked about this book was the structure and how the author wrote the book from the perspective of the character. The book was well paced and easily drew you in. I felt that it had the right amount of excitement and suspense to keep the reader enjoyed but not overwhelmed. I loved the beautiful storyline and friendship of the characters. How they told the story of the refugees and the difficulties that the children had to face was beautifully written. I like the characters and find them vivid in my mind especially the young boy, Subhi.

A boy is born inside the camp so knows nothing about life outside the fence. One of the guards takes a liking to him and looks after him as well as he can. One night a young girl from the other side of the fence finds her way in, they become good friends and she visits most nights. Life in the camp is hard and becomes turbulent. Is it right to keep people behind fences as if they were dangerous animals just because of where they've come from?

The novel taught me more about refugees and what sort of things they had to go through. I found that the descriptions created memorable imagery and helped me to understand the surroundings they were in. The fact that I could picture where they were made reading it more enjoyable.

Overall, I really like this book as it had many ups and downs to keep me interested and wanting to read more. I would definitely recommend this book for people to read as I thoroughly enjoyed it. Therefore I would give this book 9/10 and would expect it to come at least close to winning.
