michael, Chobham Academy Book Group
It is set on a small farm in the 1940s and is seen through the eyes of a twelve year old girl who faces many problems and rises to the occasion so she is very courageous. As the book touches on many problems that children can resonate with, there is a lot to like: bullies, fear and the courage that comes with it, also trying to solve a problem without your parent’s permission, also coming of age which all children must experience at some point and how children can see things in other people their own age.
The author told us that the story was inspired by her grand mother telling her stories of her child hood. It is an interesting read as the characters develop and you learn more about them and their history and personality. You about know how they express them selves depending on their history and personality. At the beginning of the book the characters are developed but the story remains stagnant through out the first chapter.
