The Stars at Oktober Bend

I really don't like romance novels because I find them really boring and unrealistic. I really don't like novels where the main character has a mental issue because the story is almost always really depressing. In "The Stars at Oktober Bend", we have both. I was told by friends that it was a really good story but I couldn't disagree more.

I like the author's writing style, choice of words etc. but I am really not a huge fan of the plot. It's never really clear why (SPOILER) the boys hit Alice. What I understood was that it was because her grandfather killed a brother except that happens after she gets hit. I might have misread or misunderstood it, but I still think that the plot should be a bit more clear. There isn't a clear climax or problem and the resolution is highly unlikely.
