The Hate U Give

This book is fantastic!
The message has stayed with me far more than individual episodes in it: it's a thought-provoking exploration of police brutality and race politics in America, and uses some really brilliant music as its starting point.
Starr is a wonderful character, full of emotional depth. My favourite scenes are more the day-to-day scenes, at home or at school, which indirectly reflect the violence of the outside world. The violent scenes themselves are written well, with just enough suspense, but it's the aftermath where Thomas's writing really shines as the characters come to terms with what happens.
It's not very often a book leaves you so emotional but with so many questions, and I would say The Hate U Give is suited to boys and girls 14+. Everyone will appreciate, and should be aware of, its message.
