The Stars at Oktober Bend

The Stars at Oktober Bend, by Glenda Millard, is a surprising yet unforgettable novel that explores themes of friendship, love and forgiveness. After a tragic event during her childhood, words seem to fail Alice Nightingale so she expresses herself through beautiful poetry. It is heart-warming to see Alice's character unfurl when she meets kind Manny James and how their relationship is strengthened by not only trust and understanding but difficulties in the past. As readers, we are encouraged to reflect on the idea of judging people based on perception (e.g appearance/ disability/ stereotypical assumptions). Throughout the novel, Millard also reminds us to acknowledge some of the most valued things in life we may sometimes forget: supporting those we love and most importantly, being proud of who we are. These meaningful yet relevant messages make The Stars at Oktober Bend such an extraordinarily powerful and moving book.
