The Bone Sparrow
I have been reading The Bone Sparrow. It is Drama placed in an Immigration Detention Centre, written in narrative prose.
It made me feel happy and very sad, because of the sad situations, the injustice and their deep positivity set to getting out and saving every one for the future.
I believe that the writing is spectacular because it builds up tension and I love the way it is written in the first person by Subhi (the main character). The situations were very moving.
I connected with all the characters bar one, Beaver. Beaver was less humane. Jimmie and Subhi were great characters because I understand their motivations.
I loved this book and I recommend it but I feel the book is too long and could be condensed. It is suitable for 13+ (Carnegie felt it was 11+) because of the traumatic violence and the details given by the author about the protests.
Due to the matters described in the book I feel that it is a great contender to win the Amnesty award but not the CILIP Carnegie award. Carnegie is about the quality of the writing and Amnesty is about the subject matter.
