The Smell of Other People's Houses
We read this when it was up for the Guardian award; it didn't win then and I don't think it will win now. Having said that, I personally quite liked it although those of us who read it agreed that a couple of the characters weren't sharply defined which led to some confusion. The metaphor suggested in the title doesn't really suffuse the narrative which is a bit disappointing. An unusual setting (Alaska) provided some local colour - and I do like a map in a book (see Salt to the Sea!).
