Isabela, Sidcot School

The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give

This is the story about Starr. She is an ordinary girl who lives in “the ghetto”. She goes to a white private school outside her community. She lives between two worlds: one in her community, being nice, a good student and having lots of friends; her other life is in her community being a ‘thug’, so she doesn’t get hurt or in trouble defending herself. Will her world collapse? This book addresses themes like racism, justice and how a Thug Life can break you.
Starr was 10 when her best friend got shot right in front of her. After 6 years she witnesses his other best friend, Khalil, being shot by a police officer, just because they were black and “dangerous”. It is not the first time it has happened and when a 16 year old boy who takes care of his brother and grandma by himself is shot, people want justice. Just for once. The police are supposed to protect you, but, they have killed an innocent kid. An unarmed kid. A kid with his whole life ahead of him.
The writing is really descriptive and has lots of slang because it is written as if Starr was telling the story, giving the character a convincing voice. I will recommend this book to girls or teenagers, especially for those who feel oppressed or live in an area of conflict, or just need a voice.
