Beyond the Bright Sea

Lauren Wolk’s writing has never improved- Wolf Hollow was a bore, and this one joins the party. The characters were charming and actually rather likable, while the dialogue drew you in- Crow herself would be a great protagonist in any other story. However, the plot dragged on for far longer than was necessary, with drama that felt incredibly forced and unrealistic- purely to bring the characters together for a happy ending. The ending itself was okay- it was clearly intended to feel heart-warming and satisfying, but it’s a stock Aesop that was clear from the beginning. All in all, it’s a book you’ve got to drag yourself through for little reward. Not worth the time.
