The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give is a book about a teenage girl named Starr who grew up in a poor neighborhood but goes to a posh school in the suburbs. She finds it hard to adjust between both lifestyles after her best friend, Khalil, is shot by a police officer. She finds it very hard to cope after his death. I really like this book because it's written very much like it is coming from a teenage girl. It uses modern references and language which makes it seem realistic. It also has a very realistic story line which is the genre I enjoy the most. Angie Thomas, the author of the book, says that she grew up with a lot of drug dealing and gun crimes in her neighborhood. She witnessed the shooting of a young man by the police which introduced the idea of this story. She also said how she wanted to write about something powerful and she thought the topic of racism would make the book very meaningful. I think this book will make young adults recognise that racism is something that still effects people to this day. Starr is a very interesting character who goes through a lot in the book and copes with it very well especially for a teenage girl. She is a strong independent character who makes the book very appealing. I really think this book will be one of the top choices for the carnegie book of the year because of how it is written and how well the subjects of matter are incorporated into it.
