Bea, Hope Valley College Pageturners
Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth
This is a very lively book with some unexpected twists. At first i thought this book was very confusing with the alien dog thing but when the story got going it was a very clever way of making you use your imagination. I think the illustrations sometimes stopped your imagination and sometimes even gave it away. I really enjoyed this book because it was an easy read (a little childish) but it was a nice change from the more serious, more grown up books shortlisted for the Carnegie awards. Although he did not fail to include all the extra treats a good book should include, e.g. "When you looked up at night in Strammodie the sky was velvet smothered in luminous caster sugar. When you looked up in the town, it was just a few hundred specks of paint on a blackboard." I personally found this book good enough to become Mr Boyce's second winner of the CILIP Carnegie Medal!
