Dana, Fully Booked
This is an incredibly powerful book. It deals with cruelty through bullying, prejudice and the consequences of war. Annabelle is trying to negotiate the transition from child to adult in very difficult circumstances, trying to balance everyone's needs - looking after her brothers with trying to avoid being bullied by Berry and helping Toby with doing her chores. She's constantly looking over her shoulder to do what is right and get to the bottom of Betty's disappearance as the lies and secrets mount up. She comes across as a likeable character, but not so perfect as to be unbelievable.
This book is an excellent crime/mystery/thriller which keeps you guessing right to the end. It was a bit frustrating when the author tells you that Annabelle has worked out where Betty is and how to get crucial information out of Andy and then keeps you waiting until it is disclosed in the narrative. But this does make you want to keep reading. This is a very more-ish book to read and very hard to put down. Probably my favourite of the short list, but I'm not sure it will be the winner.
