Alice, Carshalton High School for Girls
In 'Beck', Mal Peet and Meg Rosoff create an amazing story about the life of Beck, a mixed-race kid who goes through many traumatizing times, but does find happy times in the end. It is set in the early 1900s and tells the story of a black orphaned boy leaving England on a ship and travelling to Canada. He lived with Monks then was sold to a family, runs away from them, has a run in with Al Capone and survives! as well as other life changing adventures. I would recommend this for teenagers aged 13+ as there is some graphic content in it. It is a great read, and I loved it!
