The Hate U Give

I have recently finished The Hate U Give and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. There were multiple times when I couldn't put the book down. To summarise, the book is about a girl called Starr who lives in a poor community that is rich with violence and drug dealers. However her parents thought it was safer for her and her brothers to go to a private school in the suburbs. The book is very much about how she balances her 'two lives' before and after her best friend Khalil is shot by a white police officer. There are tones of equality and determination throughout this book and the author Angie Thomas does a very good job at describing what really goes on inside ghettos. The book taught me to never stop doing good. One of Starr's Mother's quotes is 'sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right.' Reader warning, there is quite a lot of swearing in this book, The Hate U Give is not suitable for children Year 6 and below.
