The Stars at Oktober Bend

The Stars at Oktober Bend is a fictional novel. It tells the story of a 15 year old girl, Alice, who suffers from ABI following an assault. It gives an insight into her daily struggles and we follow her as she tries to piece her life back together.

The author very cleverly incorporates a different type of writing. She uses poetry with a fragmented syntax, without the use of correct punctuation, to reflect Alice's state of mind.

Along the way, she meets Manny, a sixteen year old child soldier who has experienced traumatizing events in his native land, Sierra Leone. Against all odds, the two seem to find comfort in one another and play a role in building each other's lives, on an emotional and sentimental level.

I personally found it difficult to fully immerse myself into the story due to its layout. On the other hand, I appreciate that this structure adds great value to the story itself.

I would recommend this book to people 12+, who can handle the mature topics this book briefly touches.
