Matthias, The Romans

The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give Angie Thomas

"The Hate U Give" is a book about a teenager who tries to balance two vastly different worlds and has to act differently in both of them. This all comes to an end when Starr's best friend is shot by a police officer, when she seeks out justice her two worlds collide.

This book is written through the eyes of a young girl named Starr, I got to experience the way she perceives the inequality, racism and injustice around her throughout her whole life and her hardships. The way she felt and how it affected her everyday life conveys the powerful message of this inequality and how much power people have in situations like this, on one hand we have the police officer who doesn't receive any punishment and on the other there are powerful gang members threatening to take lives for any snitching. This all makes it very hard for Starr to use her voice and fight for justice.

I think that this book has to be my favourite as I feel it is easy to engage and understand it, and it brings up important every day situations such as police brutality and the black lives matter movement. I feel that I didn't know enough about this sort of inequality and being brought through Starr's life intrigued me to find out more and keep up to date with news of these sorts.

I believe that this book should win because it draws a lot of attention to the subject of racism and inequality in a way that I have personally never seen. It was brave of Angie Thomas to write something like this in a time where you can be judged very harshly for what you believe in.
