The Smell of Other People's Houses
The Smell of Other People's Houses alternates first-person narratives of four teenagers: Ruth who lives with her strict grandmother and younger sister; Dora who stays at a friend's house to avoid her own parents; Alyce struggling to escape the confines of the town; and Hank, running away from the darkness with his two younger brothers. Sympathetically written, the difficult topics of loss, abandonment and death are movingly told.
The characters are superbly drawn and the stories interweave. I would give this book 8/10 as I enjoyed piecing it together and the ending ties up the loose ends.
