Megan, St Bede's Inter-Church School

The Hate U Give

I absolutely loved this book! It has such a powerful message behind it which is I think probably one of its best features. The plot really gave me a new opinion on discrimination against people because of their race. I feel as if this book really opened my eyes more to this modern world issue, and made me realize what an effect this has on peoples lives. I became so emotionally involved in this story and became especially attached to the character of Starr. Her emotions were portrayed so strongly that she felt so life-like. Also, the change in character, from Starr in Garden Heights to her posh high school really adds more depth to her character. I love the use of dialogue, particularly because of the use of slang, and the balance is right between that and the narrative. The use of the true story of Emmett Till is also an interesting element and is presented very accurately. With the violent themes and the main focus of the book being on racial discrimination, I definitely think this is aimed at young adults. This book is one of my favorites by far!
