Mrs Rea, Merchant Taylors' Boys' School
Annabelle, the 12 year old narrator of Wolf Hollow, is an intelligent and engaging girl, who describes the events of autumn 1943 around her family farm in Pennsylvania. When Betty joins her school, her bullying and lies start a chain of events that force Annabelle to make difficult decisions. All the characters are well described, but especially Annabelle, Betty and Toby, the shell-shocked former soldier. While Toby's war experiences root the novel in a particular period of history, the events of the plot transcend time, and create a story that will become a children's classic. The writing is precise, the plot well constructed and the characters are all credible and interesting.
