Mrs C, Somervale Carnegie Reading Group
I decided to read this book before letting any student read it and I'm glad I took that decision. The book, although well-written and by fantastic authors, was not suitable (in my opinion) for my group of KS3 students. Although the facts may be correct and as adults we know that things like this have and still do take place, I don't feel there was need for this to be included in the Children's Book Awards. In my opinion it was far too graphic in places for students to be mature enough to fully understand the context and the gravity of the terrible acts that took place. Reading for pleasure at school should be just that - reading to enjoy. I feel disappointed that there wasn't another title that could have been chosen for the shortlist this year.
