Town is by the Sea

Town is by the Sea is illustrated by Sydney Smith. Our Book Clubbers were intrigued to know where and when this was set and they were fascinated by Sydney Smith's gentle, muted, detailed, atmospheric drawings. The colours faded and darkened underground where the boy's father was a coal miner like his father before him. The story is one of acceptance, this is the life that one day he will lead. Somehow there is a comfort in knowing this is what is expected of him. It is OK that "One day, it will be my turn". The story was set in Cape Breton Nova Scotia in the 1950s when mining was the main form of employment.
