Why Support Us?

70 Years Celebration

Donate to the CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Awards and help:

  • Reward the best quality books for children and young people
  • Further develop the shadowing scheme and engage more young people in reading and debating each year’s shortlists
  • Engage children with outstanding writing and illustration through more free learning resources
  • Raise the profile of the Awards in the media and amongst the public
  • Continue to develop the Awards websites – which are critical in engaging wider audiences and readers overseas

Since 1994 children in reading groups have ‘shadowed’ the judging process; reading shortlisted titles, writing online reviews, debating and deciding which books are their favourites. The shadowing scheme involves nearly 90,000 children in over 3,200 groups across the UK and overseas. CILIP provides fun and interactive websites, reader activities, visual literacy activities and videos of the authors and illustrators talking about their work.

Through shadowing young people think more deeply about books, enjoy reading as a social activity, discover new books and explore their creative responses to books through debates, reviews, artwork and drama. Help us to further support and develop the shadowing scheme.

In 2007 we asked young people involved in the shadowing scheme how they felt about taking part:

94% said they had read books they wouldn’t have otherwise read
77% agreed that they had thought more deeply about books than they normally do
68% said they found extra time to read
79% said they are more confident telling people what they think about a book

Donate to the Awards and help us continue and develop this fantastic work.

We have special anniversary supporter options for Individuals, Organisations and Corporate Supporters.
