Jasmine, Beaumont Readers

Things A Bright Girl Can Do

I have a lot to say about this book, so get ready for a long review.

Firstly, I would like to point out that I am grateful that this book sheds light on topics that are still relevant today, such as feminism, sexual orientation and religion. I think it's extremely important to talk about these things and the issues we have with them.

However, I usually shadow The CILIP Carnegie book awards because I want to review the quality of stories themselves. I found that while reading this book, it made me frustrated on multiple occasions and the characters were bland and inconsistent (especially Evelyn). I just don't personally think it's very well written and to me it honestly feels that the author is trying to push their opinions on the reader, whether that be through character's opinions, things they say or events that happen.

I would like to re-iterate that I agree that the rights of women and gay people should be fought for (of course) but this is a story competition, and I don't think it's a very well-written story. But in my opinion, it was shortlisted because it tackles relevant topics that comply with people's political opinions.

Just because a book speaks about relevant issues does not make it a good book.

Examples of good books that tackle modern issues are Lies We Tell Ourselves and The Hate U Give. These are both books that speak up for the right of black people in America and across the globe, along with shedding light on homosexuality, hate crime and parental relationships. These are both books with believable characters, gripping plots and realistic flaws, and both books that I really enjoyed reading because aside from the message they wanted to convey, the authors wrote compelling stories along the way.

I really didn't like this book. I know that people will praise it for being good just because it agrees with their opinion and not because it's a good story, which it isn't. If I wanted to debate about modern topics, I'd enter a competition about that instead.
