Kieran, Thorpe St Andrew School - Page Turners Reading Group
This book is of all things a tale of a man desperate to reach manhood in the Philippines 100 years ago. This book tells the tale of a boy called Samkad who lives in his village with his best friend, Luki. Samkad has a very cultural way of life and he does things such as sacrificing animals and worshipping ancient gods in order to not just reach manhood and receive the cut, but to respect his way of life and one day protect the village from the Mangili. The Mangili are a tribe of people just like them that make it their main goal to hunt down and take the heads of all of Samkads tribe. When it is Samkad's time to become a man he and his father receive an omen bird that warns them to stop and once they pause the ceremony it is made clear that Samkad must be reunited with a boy like him, tied to him by their mothers eternal friendship. After Samkad's father takes the perilous journey to the lowlands to collect the new boy they come back with a rather strange man taller than any of them and with massive feet, they return home with news that a people called "Americans" are bringing war to their home. Soon after this, something happens that will change Samkad and his village forever
Thoroughly mesmerising book and a complete page turner. I couldn't put it down until I'd finished it!
