Emily, King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls
Rebound wasn't really my kind of book. It was aimed at younger readers (I'd say KS2 rather than KS3). The story wasn't bad but the fact it was written in poems annoyed me. It didn't add anything to the narrative, and at times felt like the author had just written a paragraph and then spaced it onto separate lines rather than writing a poem. There was also a lot of technical basketball terms I didn't understand -and whilst it wasn't essential to know what they meant, it made the story less immersive. For a younger reader into sports, I can see why it would be appealing. Not too long, comic strips in the middle and a protangonist into reading comics. I admire Alexander for filling that gap in the market and trying to get more kids into reading, but I wouldn't have shortlisted it for a medal. In my opinion it wasn't the top quality, enjoyable read that kept me wanting more and left me thinking afterwards that I was looking for.
