Emily, King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls
Long Way Down
Long Way Down was the best read on the shortlist so far by quite a bit, in my opinion. I loved the build of tension throughout the book, and it kept me hooked. I read it all in one day as a result; I just couldn't put it down. Unlike some of the other books on the shortlist, I think the poem format worked and (though I'm not quite sure why) it didn't seem out of place or like the author simply couldn't be bothered to write a proper book. I think the only negative (and it's a small one), was that the ending wasn't entirely clear about what was happening. Even though it wasn't made explicit what was going on with Will and the ghosts at the end, I think the choice to leave it a mystery was a deliberate one. And I certainly spent time afterwards trying to decide what I thought should happen. Long Way Down also left me thinking about some of the themes expressed in the book after I finished it, unlike most of the others. Overall I really liked the suspense and mystery of the book, and wished it was longer so I had more to enjoy.
