The Poet X
I really love this new genre of novels written as poetry and this was just the perfect combination of a tale of an emerging young slam poet told through a range of verses, that could each be read as an isolated poem.
With my teenage years, well behind me and coming from a very English, rural background my story is so different to that of Xiomara. BUT I shared so many of her emotions and trials while growing up. I was one of the tallest girls in my year, felt ugly, was at odds with my parents, lived in my head and wrote down my feelings - and fell in love with boys. Oh how she captures first love and longing - it was so beautiful it had me chuckling as my older and wiser head was reminded of those almost forgotten sensations.
My students too are relating to Xiomara, even though they too do not share her background or upbringing.
We are all enriched by this tale of learning to act up, speak out and love yourself.
If you haven't already, do check out Elizabeth Acevedo on You tube. I'm busy saving up for her own reading of Poet X !
