The Poet X
The Poet X Niamh
The Poet X, written by Elizabeth Acevedo, is a poetic novel depicting the life of a fifteen-year-old girl named Xiomara. The book shows the roller coaster of emotions that Xiomara experiences as she begins her teenage years.
Xiomara has grown up in an extremely strict Catholic home and has only one brother who she likes to call Twin. Twin and Xiomara have a very strong bond and the only thing that gets in the way of that is the fact that her Mami and Papi have always favoured him over her. However, this favouring is pushed over the edge for Mami when she finds out that Xiomara has a boyfriend; little does she know that Twin also has a boyfriend, as he is gay. Mami finds out about Xiomara’s boyfriend through a series of events.
Xiomara is careful hiding her secrets like her boyfriend, and the poetry club by confining in a notebook twin gave her. As time goes on, she takes more risks but steps over the line.
I think that this book also shows her home's progression as a family and her relationship with her Mami. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it for boys and girls aged 13+.
