Things A Bright Girl Can Do

'Things A Bright Girl Can Do' offers a refreshing insight into the lives of three girls on the cusp of adulthood in the early 20th century. The reader follows their development from principled and often impetuous girls into women convicted of their need to make a difference: to the lives of those immediately around them, but also to those who would come after them. All three characters experience a similar trajectory; youthful spiritedness does not necessarily wane, but is tempered by hardship in war and by the universal realisation that life is often difficult.

'Things A Bright Girl Can Do' seemed overlong and, in places, the characters perhaps fell into stereotypical typecasts of the time period. Nevertheless, I enjoyed learning about the historical aspects of the time period immensely and found the protagonists' grappling with the realities of adult life apt!
