Ben, Woodroffe 2019

The Poet X

This isn't the kind of book I normally read, but I really enjoyed reading this. I was drawn into the way the writer 'painted' with verse - in many ways this was an ordinary-coming-of age tale,(partly biographical, I assume), but I was suprised how captivating the verse format made this. I was particularly struck that verse could create such a well-detailed picture of 'ordinary' life. I felt that the difficulty the main character encounters with her mother's piety and how they eventually overcome that obstacle was particularly well written. Overall, this is a playful and powerful celebration of the power of words, and how they can be the ticket to a happier life.
