Rebound

Rebound, by Kwame Alexander, is set in 1988 and is about a twelve-year old boy called Charlie who is grieving the loss of his father. The story follows him as he is sent to his grandparents for constantly getting into trouble. When he arrives, his cousin, Roxie introduces him to basketball in a way that he has never seen it before. Before long, he is enjoying his stay much more than he thought he would.
Personally, I did not enjoy Rebound very much. The topic did not interest me and any moral messages were unclear. I found the comic strip interludes hard to follow yet the protagonist was too much of an unlikeable, stereotypical teenager for one to feel any empathy for. I would only recommend this book to someone who particularly enjoys this style of story, as I for one thought it was not gripping and hard to read from page one. However this is of course only my opinion, and you will have to read it yourself to find out what you think about it! I rate this book 2 out of 5 stars.
