The House with Chicken Legs
Marika lives with her grandmother, Baba Yaga: she is destined to take on the role as Guardian of the Dead. However, she wants a normal life with other human children, whom many of which she meets throughout the book. After shocking discoveries and tough decisions, she suffers a great loss. Amidst all the chaos and many bowls of borsch later she reaches a compromise.
I think that this book is good for many reasons: the characters are well-described and you understand their emotions, every problem that comes up is so emphasised that as you're reading it, you're gripping on to the book to see what happens. The author uses lots of emotive language, that really brings the book to life. My favourite character is the house as it is funny and cute but above all, loyal. It stands by Marika no matter how much suffering she 'accidently' puts it through.
I have no ways on how this book can improve, hence why I rate it 5 out of 5!
