A Skinful of Shadows
When I heard the description of this book, I was full of hope. A book set sometime in the past with ghosts sounds 100% like my sort of thing.
Oh, how I was disappointed.
This book gave me whiplash. That may be the best way to describe it.
I had to physically force myself to read the first 5 chapters. They were incredibly slow, nothing happened, and then suddenly too much was happening and I was lost. At first, I was going to give up. But I knew that unless I read the whole book, my review could be inaccurate and biased.
As I continued reading, I thought that the book was getting better. But just as things were improving, it became too slow again. This cycle continued for basically the whole book. The plot twists weren't shocking, the ending was anti-climatic, I had no idea what was going on half the time, and the characters were quite one dimensional.
If I'm being honest, I couldn't actually tell someone what happened in the book. It was pretty unmemorable.
To conclude, I don't like this book. I wouldn't read it again, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, and I would most vehemently not vote for it to win.
