Emily, King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls
The Poet X
I loved the sound of the Poet X before I started reading and I am pleased to say that the plot of the book lived up to my expectations. The story was emotive and cleverly wove together the strands of main character Xiomara's home and school life. I loved Xiomara's fierce and fiesty personality and was rooting for her all the way through the story. I liked the insight into her character the poems provided, but at the same time felt there wasn't much variety or detail to the way the story was told. The only other downside was the quantity of Spanish phrases that I either didn't understand, or lost their impact after they had to be translated. Overall, the Poet X had a great plot with a real, relatable.
main character, but the execution of the story could have been better in order to provide a more immersive experience for the reader, perhaps by putting a poem at the start of every chapter of the book rather than telling the entire novel through verse.
