Daisy, St Edmund`s College
In the novel Bone Talk, the author Candy Gourlay explores life 100 years ago in the Philippines. The story is written from the perspective of Samkad, a 10 year old Filipino boy, who is desperate to finally 'become a man'. But when a new boy arrives in the village his whole world is upturned. The new boy brings news that the 'Americans' are bringing war to Bontok. This 'touching, if not heart-warming story' gives insight into a period of time forgotten by many. It is appropriate for ages varying from 12 to 16. I enjoyed the unpredictability of this tale and the references to the culture and ancestral beliefs of Samkad's community.
