Long Way Down

I really didn’t expect to like this book. To be honest I didnt really INTEND to like this book. As a white middle-aged librarian at a mostly-white school in rural Derbyshire, everything about this book was alien to me. Without Carnegie I would probably have never read it. And that would have been such a waste, because I loved it. I loved the way the author used language, I loved the way the words flowed, I loved the shape of the words on the pages. I loved the pared-down narrative that made me work a little bit harder, and I loved that Jason Reynolds left me to work things out for myself at the end. And I loved Chris Priestley’s haunting and very fitting illustrations. I was so drawn in by it that I read it in practically one sitting. Best read so far.
