The House with Chicken Legs

"The House With Chicken Legs" was written by Sophie Anderson and is about a 12 year old girl, Marinka, who wants to decide her own future. There are many Russian elements (the origin is from Russian folklore) such as the food. The story itself is of Marinka, seeking freedom and a friend. Her grandmother, who is a Yaga (Guardian of the Gate) says that Marinka is destined to be the next guardian and throughout the story we see how Marinka learns to accept her fate, with many adventures and whilst breaking rules along the way. The story also deals with the topics of letting go, death, treasuring memories and being grateful.
Overall, it is a very good book and aimed at a 11+ audience.
