The House with Chicken Legs

'The House with Chicken legs' is a magical novel by Sophie Anderson, based on a classic Slavic fairy tale. Marinka is a young girl who lives with her grandmother, guiding the dead in their unique house. However, Marinka does not want to fulfil her destiny and the story follows her journey towards real life.
Anderson creates real and loveable characters through her detailed descriptions and dialogue. One of the best points in the novel is how although Marinka lives in an unrealistic universe the story her emotions are still relatable. The ending is particularly rewarding because although not everything happens the way she would like, she is still able to live her dream.
Despite the excellent characterisation, it felt unnecessary that Marinka was actually dead and could only survive in the house. This didn't really develop the plot further and the story would have been just as good without it.
Overall i really enjoyed this novels quirky story and beautiful illustrations. I would definitely recommend it to people aged 7 - 11 and anyone who wants to be transported away from reality for a while. Loved it!
